Special tithi patterns

Special kinds of tithi

Some tithis fit between sunrises differently. Tithi boundaries follow the Moon–Sun angle, while sunrise follows Earth’s daily rotation. Because the clocks are independent, a tithi can fall between two sunrises or remain active at two consecutive sunrises.

The three child explorers and Gajajī compare a short tithi between two sunrises with a long tithi spanning two sunrises.

Two sunrise relationships

The tithi still occurs in both cases.

Kṣaya tithi

The tithi begins and ends between two sunrises.

SunriseTithi beginsTithi endsNext sunrise

The entire tithi falls between two sunrises, so a sunrise-based sequence skips its day name. The tithi still occurs as a real span of time.

Vṛddhi tithi

The same tithi is present at two consecutive sunrises.

One continuous tithi interval crosses two sunrises, so its day name repeats in a sunrise-based sequence.

These patterns are easier to understand after seeing why tithi boundaries and calendar-date boundaries do not line up. Why do tithis and calendar dates not always align? →
