About Open Pañcāṅga

Open Pañcāṅga is an independent educational project showing how modern technology can make Sanskrit vocabulary inviting, experiential, and connected to accurate science. It uses astronomy and the calendar as one rich subject for a non-linear, choose-your-own-path learning environment.

The three child explorers and Gajajī listen to one another while tracing several possible paths across a shared map.

User-driven learning · interaction · discovery

Choose your own course through the forest.

Open Pañcāṅga uses contemporary ideas about user-driven learning to create an interactive, choose-your-own-path experience. Begin with the word, sky event, month, observance, or question that interests you. The Trail Compass suggests new turns, while guides, changing paths, small discoveries, and Easter eggs add playful elements. Can you find them?

Astronomy · Sanskrit · calendar learning

Open Pañcāṅga is an interactive astronomy and Sanskrit calendar guide.

It connects observable and calculated astronomy with Sanskrit calendar vocabulary, documented timing rules, and cultural and religious observances. The Sky Explorer supplies live examples. Open Pañcāṅga concentrates on astronomy, calendar language, and clearly sourced timing rules. Full traditional pañcāṅga services, personal horoscopes, interpretive readings, and ritual guidance belong to other resources.

How the pieces relate

Keep observation, calculation, calendar rules, and cultural meaning distinct.

1 · Astronomical input or observation

Describe positions and events such as the Sun, Moon, sunrise, or moonrise for a place and time.

2 · Calculated classification

Apply a stated method to name a result such as tithi, pakṣa, rāśi, nakṣatra, yoga, or karaṇa. These calculated labels form a layer distinct from direct sky observation.

3 · Calendar or observance rule

State which named convention and controlling time turn continuous motion into a displayed calendar result.

4 · Cultural connection

Connect the sky and Sanskrit words with a familiar cultural or religious occasion, while explaining why its date may vary by place or tradition.

Reliable sources · visible references

We publish information after its sources and methods are verified.

Open Pañcāṅga makes an effort to use reliable, publicly available sources and shows the references behind its explanations and calendar rules. Claims and methods enter the site after verification. Live astronomical checks are limited to respect the shared NASA/JPL service.
