Vasanta Pañcamī · Sarasvatī Pūjā · spring and learning
What is Vasanta Pañcamī?
Vasanta Pañcamī is an annual spring festival on Māgha Śukla Pañcamī. It is widely associated with Sarasvatī Pūjā and with learning, knowledge, music, and the arts. Names and practices vary across regions and traditions.

The name is a calendar lesson
Vasanta means spring; Pañcamī means the fifth tithi.
Spring—the season of new growth celebrated by the festival.
The Sanskrit lunar-month name used to find this observance.
The bright, waxing half of the lunar month.
The fifth tithi: the fifth tick in this bright half of the Moon's monthly clock.
Put together, Māgha Śukla Pañcamī means the fifth lunar day of the bright fortnight in the lunar month Māgha.
Sarasvatī and learning
Why is Sarasvatī Pūjā associated with this day?
Sarasvatī is associated with learning, knowledge, speech, music, and the arts. Government of India sources explicitly join Vasanta Pañcamī with Sarasvatī Pūjā and describe Sarasvatī as the deity of knowledge and the arts. People may worship Sarasvatī, begin or renew study, honor books and musical instruments, make art or music, or participate in local spring traditions.
These are broad examples of participation. Regional names, rituals, foods, colors, and community celebrations differ.

How Open Pañcāṅga identifies the date
This guide checks Māgha Śukla Pañcamī at local sunrise.
The application first calculates which tithi prevails at sūryodaya, local sunrise. It then checks whether the named amānta lunar-month calculation gives the regular month Māgha. When both conditions match, it identifies Vasanta Pañcamī.
This is the date-selection method used here. A regional or traditional calendar may apply additional checks or use a different lunar-month system, so it may select a nearby date.
An official Government of Odisha publication places Mahāsarasvatī Pūjā on Māgha Śukla Pañcamī in the regional temple calendar it describes. The general sunrise rule comes from the historical calendrical reference used elsewhere on this site as the default controlling time for this observance.

Two celebrations of learning
Vasanta Pañcamī and World Sanskrit Day are different occasions.
Both can lead into conversations about learning and Sanskrit, but they occur at different places in the lunar calendar. Vasanta Pañcamī is the annual festival on Māgha Śukla Pañcamī and is widely associated with Sarasvatī Pūjā. World Sanskrit Day is a modern cultural and educational observance on Śrāvaṇa Śukla Pūrṇimā.
