Dhamma Cakka Day · first teaching · Sarnath
What is Dhamma Cakka Day / Āṣāḍha Pūrṇimā?
Dhamma Cakka Day commemorates the Buddha’s first teaching to five ascetics at the Deer Park in Sarnath.

Teaching · names · calendar
The day joins the Buddha’s first teaching with Āṣāḍha Pūrṇimā.
Dhamma is the Buddha’s teaching, and cakka is Pāli for wheel. The occasion remembers the teaching of the Four Noble Truths and Noble Eightfold Path. It also marks the beginning of the rains retreat for many Buddhist monastic communities.
Communities may listen to Dhamma teachings, chant, meditate, make offerings, give alms, or renew ethical commitments according to their tradition.
The International Buddhist Confederation uses Āṣāḍha Pūrṇimā and Dhammacakkappavattana Divas. Related observances include Esala Poya in Sri Lanka and Āsāḷha Pūjā in Thailand. Each community follows its own calendar and practice.
Open Pañcāṅga shows Dhamma Cakka Day when Pūrṇimā is underway at local sunrise during regular amānta Āṣāḍha. It may appear beside Guru Pūrṇimā because the observances share a calendar condition while carrying distinct histories and meanings.
